Darksiders III Game Review
Six years since Darksiders II was released, THQ Nordic and Gunfire Games (formed by former Vigil Games employees) have taken over publishing and development respectively for Darksiders 3. However, this still feels like an improvement upon Darksiders II in terms of player experience and excitement.
Fight the Seven Deadly Sins across an expansive apocalyptic world using FURY’s magic to unlock her various forms and unlock powerful weapons, moves, and traversal abilities.
Story
Darksiders III is the third installment in a series of games that share a similar premise: players take on the role of one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse: War, Death or Fury – War being focussed upon first; Death second and now Fury in this one. As with its predecessors, however, its narrative is somewhat more intricate as something started the Apocalypse prematurely in an alternate reality and wiped out humanity while setting up conflict between Heaven and Hell that leads them both to fight over control of earth!

This game follows Fury, War and Death’s younger sister who is charged by the Charred Council – an association of mythical beings who control Horsemen – with tracking down and apprehending any Seven Deadly Sins who have managed to escape imprisonment. Fury agrees on one condition – becoming leader of Horsemen once her mission has been accomplished.
Darksiders III still retains the look and feel of previous titles in the franchise, yet does depart from some aspects that made those other two games successful. There are fewer open worlds to explore; environments are much more linear; this may make the games feel less open but more confining; another change is that puzzles in this game tend to be simpler with most simply consisting of hitting certain objects to open doors or throw enemies against walls; plus there are far fewer boss battles (if any exist at all) occurring and they usually last only brief amounts of time compared with previous titles in terms of length compared with what makes Darksiders games so special compared to its predecessors.
Combat in this game differs significantly from those found in its predecessors as it emphasizes managing enemies with agile, stamina-free melee combat – something which can be very effective, yet bewildering if caught unawares – though the game does offer checkpoints to mitigate such issues.
Darksiders III is an intriguing installment in the franchise. It boasts some great combat, some fun side missions and an intriguing plot arc – making it worth checking out if you enjoy Darksiders but don’t expect it to match up to previous installments of this series.
Characters
Darksiders III takes inspiration from Metroid and Souls series games to provide players with a thrilling gaming experience. You take control of Fury, one of three Horsemen of the Apocalypse alongside War and Death under orders of the Charred Council to hunt down and defeat Seven Deadly Sins – from New York shattered remains to an abandoned temple on an ocean reef! A variety of characters and environments awaits players including New York itself as well as an abandoned temple in the middle of nowhere!
Darksiders III, developed and published by Gunfire Games and THQ Nordic, was released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC on November 27, 2018 to generally positive reviews and sales that far outstripped expectations. Gunfire Games announced that if it sells over 100,000 copies they would consider making another sequel!
As with the other Darksiders games, this one features both familiar characters and villains along with some newcomers. The narrative unfolds via comic book-esque cinematics that highlight the Horsemen’s demise and subsequent quest to track down and destroy the Seven Deadly Sins on behalf of Charred Council.
Darksiders III is a 2.5D sidescrolling action-adventure game with an open world to explore at will, featuring combat between demons and angels in various locations across a vast landscape. Fury can take on various elemental forms to increase her combat effectiveness while Hollows serve as mobile platforms through which to travel the game’s world.
The Hollows are a key feature of gameplay, providing the mage with additional powers that enable her to both fight and traverse her environment, as well as providing shortcuts. Their art style recalls Mike Mignola’s work while their setting of post-apocalyptic Earth in transition serves as the backdrop for character growth and discovery.
Fury is an amusing and energetic protagonist with an short fuse who can become somewhat irritating at times. While she may lack some of War’s depth or complexity, Fury makes up for it with her sharp one-liners and witty comments that add an edge of humor to proceedings.
Gameplay
Darksiders series has always been an engaging action-adventure hack and slash game, and the third installment was no different. Players take control of one of four Horsemen of Apocalypse known as Fury in this installment of Darksiders that mixes Metroidvanias and Soulslike elements for an unparalleled gaming experience.
War and Death use guns and swords as their primary means of attack in combat, while Fury prefers magic and whips to strike at foes. She can even transform into various elemental forms to increase her attack and traversal abilities. In Darksiders III there is also a more methodical approach to battle that focuses on smaller numbers of stronger foes for a more personalized battle experience.
Darksiders III is a third-person action role-playing video game developed by Gunfire Games and published by THQ Nordic, making its debut since Darksiders 2 was released in 2011. Critical reception for Darksiders III has been mixed, as both critics and players laud its unique visual style and innovative gameplay while at the same time criticizing its lack of depth and complexity.
This game takes place after an apocalypse has occurred, with the Charred Council calling upon four Horsemen to hunt and eradicate Seven Deadly Sins. War and Death are held captive, while Strife can be found elsewhere; thus leaving Fury alone as she brings justice back into society.
Gamers will assume the role of Fury, a female mage and sister to War and Death. She uses various weapons to fight demons and other creatures in her world after Apocalypse has happened, using her powers against seven deadly sins through an engaging hack and slash gameplay like other hack and slash games such as Castlevania series with combat using whip-like combat features reminiscent of Gabriel Belmont.
The game features a tight environment that makes navigation difficult. Complicating matters further is the lack of any map or other method for finding one’s location in the world; players will have to backtrack often after receiving Hollow powers which allow them to jump higher or further than before. Furthermore, unlike Darksiders 2, there is no loot or weapons with different damage values that can be purchased and upgraded; rather, Fury receives new armor and weapons after defeating one or more Deadly Sins.
Final Words
Darksiders III, from Vigil Games’ critically acclaimed Darksiders franchise, marks its conclusion and features Fury as one of the Four Horsemen of Apocalypse who is assigned by Charred Council to retrieve physical manifestations of Seven Deadly Sins on Earth.
Similar to its predecessor, Darksiders II takes place in a post-apocalyptic world in which angels and demons have engaged in an irrepressible war between angels and demons. Instead of playing as War – who was blamed for starting it early – this time you take on the role of Fury who more closely resembles Death than War.
Darksiders III immerses you in an immersive network of interconnected environments filled with special bosses and enemies, including familiar ones from previous games like Darksiders 2. Combat is somewhat slower and more melee focused, yet still offers satisfying action RPG play; killing enemies for experience points and respawning at safe spots after dying is still present; in addition, Souls will help unlock special abilities as you advance further in the campaign.
The game’s level design is an intriguing synthesis, mixing elements from both God of War and Zelda/Metroidid into its open world design. This can be seen through your character unlocking traversal powers gradually throughout the course of play – such as rotating buildings by freezing them in place to line up jumps or quickly crossing rivers using dragon-shaped wingskins – offering an intriguing play experience that transcends series’ gaming boundaries.
Darksiders III stands as a worthy successor to its predecessor thanks to its stunning artwork, creative creatures and captivating plot. While this may be the last game featuring one of the Four Horsemen as protagonists, Vigil Games created an exciting ending which could serve as the basis of another sequel in future installments of this franchise.
